Exception 36: ANNETTE FUNICELLO FOREVER
Annette Joanne Funicello (October 22, 1942 – April 8, 2013) was an American actress and singer, who recently leaved. I take her as a American yeyé singer, although she had a great voice range capable of cover other music styles. As a teenager, she transitioned to a successful career as a singer with the pop singles "O Dio Mio," "Tall Paul" and "Pineapple Princess", as well as establishing herself as a film actress, popularizing the successful "Beach Party" genre alongside co-star Frankie Avalon in 1963. The Goodees
are Kay Evans, Sandra Jackson, and Judy Williams. These three
girlfriends at Messick High School in Memphis, Tennessee, were all
interested in music. They sang together at school functions and local
events, then finally entered a talent contest and won. The prize
included an audition at Stax Records, which ended up getting them a
recording contract. Stax put their records out on their subsidiary
label, Hip Records. They covered several hits from the 1960's, including
this one from the Swingin' Medallions. But, being girls, they had to
adjust the lyrics a bit, turning it into an answer to the original song.
The song was never issued on a single, but as a track on their only
album, Candy Coated Goodees. Could Booker T and Steve Cropper be playing
on this track?
The Goodees were actual One-Hit Wonders, having made just one appearance on Billboard's Hot 100 with a song called Condition Red. It's clearly an adaptation of Leader Of The Pack by the Shangri-Las, but it's not bad. It hit the charts on Christmas week in 1968 and peaked at #46. It went to #38 on Cashbox, but did much better in certain regions, such as Chicago (#15) and Toronto (#10). They recorded the song in 1969.

The original members included John McElrath on keyboards, Jim Doares on guitar, Carroll Bledsoe on trumpet, Brent Forston on sax and flute, Jimmy Perkins on bass, Hack Bartley on sax, Grainger Hines on sax, Freddie Pugh on sax, Perrin Gleaton on guitar, and Joe Morris on drums. All the members contributed vocals. The kind of music these guys make is commonly known as Carolina Beach Music.
Did you know there were two versions of Double Shot released by the Swingin' Medallions in 1966? Believe it or not, the lyrics were a bit too intense for some radio stations, so the guys had to cut a "censored" version. The fuss was all about the words "worst hangover that I ever had" which were changed to "worst morning after that I ever had." They also must have considered the words "loved me so hard" to be a bit too, er, hard, so they became "kissed me so hard" instead. The censored version was released to some radio stations, and even showed up in a few stores. You can find it on rare black-label pressings made in Canada.

The Tams did a soul version in 1968, but they weren't the first to do that. In 1967, two members of the Swingin' Medallions, Brent Fortson and Steve Caldwell left the band and hooked up with three former members of The Tassles, Jimmy Bumgardner, Irven Hicks, and Wally Wood, to form a new band called Pieces Of Eight. They cut a new version of Double Shot from a soul perspective.The song was also covered by girl-group The Goodees in 1968; by The Residents, in their LP Stranger Than Supper (1990), by Joe Stampley in 1983, by The Cockroaches in 1987.

"Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" is a 1934 popular song with words and music by James Frederick "Jimmy" Hanley (Rensselaer, Indiana February 17, 1892 – Douglaston, Long Island February 8, 1942). It was introduced by Hal Le Roy and Eunice Healey in the Broadway revue Thumbs Up! Probably the most notable recordings were made by Judy Garland (who sang it in the 1938 film Listen, Darling and recorded it for Decca Records in 1939) and by The Trammps (reaching #17 on the R&B chart in 1972), but many other versions have been made. Among the artists and groups to have recorded this song include June Christy, Frank Sinatra, The Kirby Stone Four, Billy Eckstine, Richard Himber Orchestra, Jesse Belvin, The Coasters, The Dimensions, Brent Spiner, Enoch Light, The Move, The Darts, Chet Baker, Smoking Popes, Dinah Shore, Les Paul and Mary Ford, and Rufus Wainwright (who recorded the song on a tribute album to Judy Garland). In 2011, a Bing Crosby radio version of the song was released on iTunes by the Crosby Estate. This was one of the first songs that Barbra Streisand ever recorded, in 1955 at Nola Recording Studios in New York when she was 13 years old. The recording is yet to be released. EXCEPTION 27 - VIVALDI reloaded
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) composed this real jewel, Piccolo Concerto in C Major, RV 443, in 1728-9. I take this as one of the most beautiful instrumentals of all times. And I do not know why the love was the guide of this composition. ENJOY the 2nd part!

One of my favourite love songs ever! and from one of my favourite bands: The Dave Clark's Five. Their single "Glad All Over" knocked the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the UK singles charts in January 1964. This song perfectly caughts the sad feeling a man has when his love is wrong. Close your eyes and listen this real jewel!

Twist Eighty One (8:30) was firstly edited in Belgium by Mercury Records, and in France by Disc AZ' International. In spain was edited in 1982 by Edigsa, reaching a great success in whole Europe during this summer. I have deep memories dancing this Maxi-single in Palma de Mallorca.

EXCEPTION 20: LONNIE & THE LEGENDS - BABY, WITHOUT YOU
Long time without an Exception in the blog. Even when I have this section as one of the most important. Well. This time, I upload a beautiful song. There are some songs I see as total-song: when lyrics and music are perfectly linked, when one is complementary of the other, making a global, and compact thing. There are songs that have compiled inside a shoot of feelings: Shame, laugh, love, melancholy, happy, hope. All of them at the same time. You can feel what you want listening some songs. This is the magic of the music. Each of us has his own view of the song, but everyone love it in his own way.
Lonnie & The Legends was a Country & Western band from Silmar (California). They recorded this song in March, 1966, as the B side of a 45. A-side song is "I cried".Led by Lonnie Grah (guitar andsinger), had as members her mother Nancy Grah (singer), and Donna Grah (singer). Occasionally, other musicians included Kenny Ray on bass and Gene Gunnels on drums.
Lonnie & The Legends recorded a previous 45, where they included two wild instrumentals surf-rock "Penguin walk"(A side), and "Crazy Penguin"(B side) (1964).

LOS JOCKERS (CHILE) - I'M ALRIGHT reloaded
Chilean rollingstonian band Los Jockers was composed by Alán Ferrera (voices), Sergio del Río (voice & guitar), Mario Pregnant (voice & guitar), Gustave Serrano (bass), and Peter Buksdorf (drums). They reached to play more than 50 hours, and caused a disturbing commotion in their show in the Festival de la Viña in 1967.
